Toucam Pro, Pro II, SPC900NC, NexImage and DMK21 Modifications...

After many years creating innovative modifications for webcams, astronomiser is drawing this chapter to a close. Since Philips ceased production of the SPC900NC and SPC880NC cameras, this work has dwindled away and it is no longer practical for me to retain a full set of parts and sensors for this work so I have decided to offer only the basic SC1 long exposure modification to the Philips SPC900NC (or SPC880NC) webcam. It has been some years since a webcam has been developed with a CCD sensor where it's possible to control the exposure timing externally to the camera, with the emphasis on greater numbers of pixels and CMOS sensors, where the timing electronics is built in to the sensor making it impossible to control the exposure times remotely.

Down the years, we have made and modified many hundreds of cameras using our own in-house specialised modifications with the emphasis on using parts and methods that reduce (or at the very least) don't add to internal noise. We developed our own housing methods and sensor replacement methods for sensors such as the ICX618ALA and using work from Steve Chambers and Martin Burri, developed our own long exposure modifications.

Webcam Mods...

Astronomiser has decided to re-introduce the basic SC1 modification to Philips SPC900NC and SPC880NC webcams. This mod is sufficient to use the camera for basic deep sky imaging and guiding as well as planetary, lunar and solar imaging.

The ICX098BL is an excellent sensor for planetary imaging, massively improving your camera's sensitivity.

USB Only...?

These cameras are supplied with a parallel connection, but a parallel to USB adapter set is available if your PC only has USB ports, see the Parallel to USB camera converter.

wxAstroCapture, a new piece of software for Lunar, Planetary, Deep Sky imaging and Guiding fully supports Windows Vista and the use of Serial cameras and Serial to USB adapters and is free. Astronomiser strongly recommends this software, or if you wish to simply use the camera for guiding, we recommend using the simple and intuitive PHD Guiding from Stark Labs.
